I am currently a senior in high school, homeschooling (which
leaves more time for writing <evil
laugh>!). Ever since 3rd grade, I have wanted to be an ‘author’, which has
changed to a ‘published novelist’. So far, I have started working on eight
stories, nearly finished two, have rough drafts of two others, and one
mostly-finalized manuscript completed.
I started writing in 6th grade on my fantasy
Arthurian Trilogy, the first book now finished and somewhat finalized. I have
been ‘chipping away at’ a draft for the second book for years now. It was my
mother’s suggestion that I try to be published before I graduate next spring,
but I don’t see that happening. The best I can do now is
to write rough drafts of as many stories as I can so that I have something to
work with in the upcoming years when I have a job and other significant pulls
on my time.
Currently, all of the stories I am working on are simple and
conventional, the kind that are unremarkable and predictable: good trumps bad,
guy gets girl, the smart one wins the day, the world revolves around the main
characters. It is my hope that one
day I will attempt to tackle the
themes and abstract ideas that are important to me, as the literary greats did.
That isn’t to say that I think I can write like John Steinbeck or Mary Shelley,
but I would like to try, someday.
Right now, I concentrate on schoolwork in the morning and story
in the afternoon. Writing comes in waves, for a few weeks, I can’t get my
fingers off the keyboard. After a month or two, I just can’t stand the idea of
sitting down and trying to scrape up two thousand words when I could be doings something
else. At such times, I often enjoy drawing characters and events to help me
visualize them. It is my hope to share these images in my blog as well. In
fact, since writing is a slow and tedious process, you might see many of these
pictures spliced in with progress reports.
Writing under the pen name of ‘Jayne Gray’, I hope you can
find some value in this blog. Besides drawings and progress reports, I will
post any updates and opportunities I find that fellow writers may find interesting.
You will not be reading many story
ideas, however (at least not mine). I horde these as dragons do gold and do not
like to share.
Thank you for your interest in my little world, and I hope you have a pleasant stay.
Jayne Gray
